What is Sexual Violence?
Sexual violence is an umbrella term encompassing a wide range of acts including but not limited to rape, sexual assault, harassment, stalking, unwanted touching, etc. In other words, sexual violence is any sexual act committed against someone without that person’s freely given consent. Consent should be enthusiastic and affirmatively communicated through verbal or non-verbal language. Consent cannot be assumed or obtained through coercion, manipulation, force, or while under the influence of any drug(s) including alcohol.
Denim Day
Denim Day is a campaign that was started as a ruling in the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt the victim, by wearing jeans, would have needed to help the person who raped her to remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans to stand in solidarity with the victim.
