Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)
“It’s Time to Talk About It”
April 2021 marks the official 20th anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). IFC, PHC, NPHC, and MGC are working together throughout the month of April to provide education, awareness, and programming to our community during Sexual Assault Awareness Month!
What is Sexual Violence?
Sexual violence is an umbrella term encompassing a wide range of acts including but not limited to rape, sexual assault, harassment, stalking, unwanted touching, etc. In other words, sexual violence is any sexual act committed against someone without that person’s freely given consent. Consent should be enthusiastic and affirmative communicated through verbal or non-verbal language. Consent cannot be assumed or obtained through coercion, manipulation, force or while under the influence of any drug(s) including alcohol.
**Throughout the month, we will be giving out buttons that can attach to your backpack, jacket, shirt, whatever you choose!
*Trigger Warning: sexual assault, rape*
Denim Day is a campaign that was started as a ruling in the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt the victim, by wearing jeans, would have needed to help the person who raped her to remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans to stand in solidarity with the victim.
We stand with survivors of sexual assault. Join us in wearing jeans on April 28th with your SAAM shirt as a visual means of protesting against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence.
