My freshman year, myself and thirty other fraternity brothers signed up for the Be the Match program volunteering to be bone marrow donors if we were ever a match with a patient in need. Earlier this year, I was contacted by the Iowa Marrow Donor Program and Be the Match. In spite of everything going on in the world today, I found out that I was a match for a patient that needed a bone marrow transplant. Recently, I donated 1.7 liters of bone marrow anonymously.
While many people never receive the call to donate that I did, I think signing up is such a testament to our community and what we stand for. I know that any of my fraternity brothers who signed up would donate if given the opportunity. If anyone would be interested in donating, they can use this link: join.bethematch.org/Brendan.
When associating fraternity and philanthropy, I think everyone's mind goes directly toward fundraising events. We often forget that philanthropy takes many different forms. This small gift can be the life saving treatment needed for a person to spend many more joyful years with their family. By donating, you could be the hope and the hero that a mother, father, son, daughter, or friend needs.
